A Basque Coastal & City Tour from the Port of Bilbao
We designed a custom Bilbao shore excursion for 4 clients that where visiting the region aboard a luxury cruise ship. The group asked for a experience beyond just seeing the city of Bilbao. We delivered a “one-off” private Basque tour that fit their exact specifications
The guests had a negative experience previously on large “cattle bus” operations that are frequently offered on large cruise ships. We had the answer for them with a custom city and coastal tour.
We met them promptly at the Bilbao cruise terminal with our luxury Mercedes-Benz. Irene and I first took the group to see the beautiful and dramatic coast near the coastal city of Sopelana. This stop is only a 10 minute drive from the port, and is a hidden gem on the Basque Country coast.
After some photos we left for our next stop in the old port of Algorta. Algorta is centuries old fishing village perched on the cliffs of Getxo overlooking the Bay of Biscay. The city has amazing architecture with little chalets with red, white, and green painted shutters. Our clients loved this little village and had never seen anything like it.
The group also requested to see the UNESCO World Heritage Biscay Bridge or hanging bridge. Alberto Palacio, a disciple of Gustavo Effiel, designed the unique bridge. This bridge was cutting edge for the time when it was built in the late 19th century.
Our final stop was to see the exterior of the famed Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry and constructed in 1997. This museum transformed the city of Bilbao and led a movement of gentrification along the riverfront.
We then went on a walking tour through the old quarter of Bilbao. The old quarter dates back to the 1300s and is absolutely a must see when visiting Bilbao. This section of the city is full of lively pintxo bars. Pintxos are the Basque version of Spanish tapa, and nearly every bar in the Basque Country offers them. It is always a delight to taste the different pintxo offerings in the Basque Country.
Our clients thoroughly enjoyed their custom Basque experience and had nothing but great things to see about their Basque coast and Bilbao tour. They are looking to come back to see San Sebastian and the French side of the Basque Country next summer. It is safe to say that our beautiful little region did not disappoint!
